On July 21st, 2001 Modern Performance and the MCA hosted their second Technical Seminar of the year at IDA Automotive's dyno facility in Morganville, NJ.  This seminar showcased the new Modern Performance Programmable computer and boost controller to give us some idea of it's potential.  George Schults' car was used as the test subject for all the runs.

George Schults, Dave Ziminski, Andrew Nemr, Joe Nemr, Alex Chaney, Bob Ida, Lionel Baron, Nick Mannarino

We had fourteen owners turn up for this event:

Lionel Baron
Gerald Burnham and his wife Ann
Paul Ceppi
Alex Chaney
Bob & Rob Ida
Nick Mannarino

Joe Nemr and his son Andrew
George Schults
Ray Weatherdon
Dave Weiner
Dave Ziminski
Special thanks to Nick, owner of Modern Performance for showing us how his programmable computer /boost controller works. The system functions in conjunction with the EEC-IV to control the major components of the engine management system, with added features such as boost control.  It can also run special programs -  a drag racing program for example, which is designed to keep the rpm up to any chosen range, even while lifting off the gas to shift gears.

Nick and Bob Ida were able to change the timing, fuel and boost while monitoring the air/fuel mixture of George's car on the Dyno Jet .  All the changes were made quickly (within one minute or less), and then another pull was performed to confirm the performance improvements.  Currently Nick has this system on several cars and has had very good results. George's engine was still in the process of being broken in (with <1,500 miles) and the waste gate was not working properly, but his car gained more power and improved drivability.  This system looks like the next step to make more power (safely) while still providing better overall drivability and emissions for those of us with modified engines.  Dave Ziminski will be the next Merkur owner to get the system on his car and we're looking forward to hear his report too.

We also wish to thank Nick for sponsoring the event and providing the cold drinks and Pizza.  Everyone had a great time watching the progress of George's car and checking out the fantastic cars at Bob Ida's shop. Bob truly is an artist and his cars are real showstoppers.

Ever been to a dyno?  Wondered what's it's like?
